Kathleen Ruane:  I’m here with Irwin Gotlieb, of GroupM, at the What’s Next Conference. Irwin, can you just give us some idea of what clients need to be looking out for?

Irwin Gotlieb:  Well, the one thing you always have to bear in mind is whatever the shiny object is today; it may not be around in the future. So, let’s go back. For example, in 1992, if we were having this conversation then, we’d probably be talking about CompuServe and I wonder how many people under 30 even remember that that company existed. If we were having the conversation in ’95 it probably would have been about Prodigy, in ’98 it would have been about AOL. In 2001, it probably would have been Jeeves and then of course Google came along in 2003 as a dominant developing force. The underlying constant here is that whatever the giant is for the day, its day too will come, and it will be replaced.

GroupM’s What’s Next was held this week in New York City.  Irwin Gotlieb was on the panel for the final session: “What’s Next and How to Get There” – he was joined on the panel with Rob Norman, CEO, GroupM N.A.; and Phil Cowdell, Chairman, Mindshare N.A.
